System Overview

The Interferometric Laser Imaging Droplet Sizer (ILIDS) is designed to provide planar distribution of size and velocity of individual transparent spherical droplets and bubbles. When a laser sheet is applied to a droplet or bubble and its scattering light is captured at an angle on a non-focal plane, a fringe is observed as a result of interference between the reflected light and refracted light. The number of stripes in the fringe is proportional to the droplet diameter. To prevent circular images from overlapping, they are compressed into linear images while retaining information of the fringes. Because of the improvement by this optical compression technique, the ILIDS can now be applicable to high-density spray flows.
